A basket strainer is a pipeline filtration device that uses a basket-shaped mesh to separate solids from liquids or gases. It effectively removes debris, sand, particles, and other impurities from fluids such as water, oil, compressed air, and gas, protecting downstream equipment like pumps, valves, and heat exchangers. Basket strainers are widely used in industrial, municipal, petrochemical, and water treatment applications.
The core component is the filter basket, usually made of stainless steel (304/316L) and shaped as a cylinder or cone. Mesh sizes range from 0.5 to 100 mesh, allowing selection based on required filtration precision. The basket is removable for easy cleaning or replacement. The strainer is typically installed inline via flanges, allowing fluid to enter the inlet, trap debris in the basket, and exit clean from the outlet. Collected solids can be removed during routine maintenance.

Basket strainers are categorized by application:
Liquid basket strainers: for industrial water, lubrication oil, and other liquids
Gas basket strainers: for compressed air, natural gas, and other gases
They are also available in vertical and horizontal configurations to fit different pipeline layouts. Compared with Y-type strainers, basket strainers provide a larger filtration area, higher debris-holding capacity, and reduced risk of clogging, making them ideal for fluids with higher solid content, although they require more installation space.
